The Interior Trim course reviews the process for creating automotive interior plastic parts. Candidates will create features for plastic part design and study the injection molded part process. This course leverages real-world design problems presented by automotive manufacturers for case work throughout the course.

Plastics Fundamentals
Candidates will be able to:

• Identify the different types of molded interior parts and the packaging, regulations, and sight lines for each part
• Create plastic parts incorporating plastic part design standards and the most effective features
• Design ribs, snaps, and living hinges
• Recognize when user defined features are required and how to create them
• Correctly create a parting line and the draft
• Translate and fix data in and out of a computer program.
• Create and edit automotive interior parts using the correct design rules and standards
• Assemble plastic parts using mating condition and validate the design
• Recognize the need for and create smart model geometry
• Distinguish between the different automotive design rules/regulations

Plastics Design and Tooling
Using plastic part design knowledge and the material in this section, the candidate will be able to:

• Recognize the different parts of a mold and identify its function
• Recognize the basic mold design principles and be able to design a plastic part to accommodate the different aspects of the mold
• Distinguish the basic features of a mold design
• Identify the correct type of mold design to use for the different types of parts
